CARNAVAL EXPERIENCE 2025
(In Oaxaca, Mexico)
7 Day Photo Workshop
FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 6, 2025
$3,900 USD
LIMITED TO 7 ATTENDEES!
Experience Carnaval San Martín Tilcajete with accomplished Mexican street photographer David Coleman. David was born and raised in Mexico and is an expert with the Mexican people, customs, language, and world renowned Oaxacan culinary cuisine.
One of the world’s most unique festivals, the Carnaval San Martín Tilcajete in the state of Oaxaca, México, is notable for its use of satire especially related to matrimony. We will visit the towns of San Martín de Tilcajete and Zaachila where people, covered in motor oil and acrylic paint, dance in the streets with intricate costumes of devils, animal skulls, and clanging bells.
The workshop also includes visual storytelling instruction and image review sessions.
“I am SO glad I went along with David to Oaxaca for his photography workshop during Carnival! He is so knowledgable—in photography, about Oaxaca...and the food, oh the food! He joked that this was really a food workshop with some photography ;) It was truly a great mix of both. In addition to tours of Oaxaca (and its' amazing restaurants), he took us to incredible smaller towns and markets. The photography classes were invaluable regarding street photography and storytelling. I learned about Zone focusing, too. I learned so much and loved every minute of this experience. I miss it already."- Lisa Berman, Berkeley, CA
"As an studio photographer who has taught and attended various workshops, I can strongly recommend signing up with David Coleman... In the workshop, David provided a strong didactic component on his perspectives on photographic storytelling. David knew where to take us and it was obvious he has had a long running relationship with the Oaxacan communities we were visiting. Our group had a great time. David is a patient teacher so if you are a beginner or intermediate level photographer one should feel comfortable." - Marc Safran, Albany, NY
"This was my first experience in a photography workshop. David made this a fantastic learning experience coupled with his insights on Oaxaca (including great restaurants), Carnival and Photography in general. He provided extensive guidance before the trip on equipment, what to expect in Oaxaca and logistics support. He also has in-station guides and drivers to make the experience as smooth as could be. The format for the workshops worked out well (morning photoshoot, afternoon class with guidance on photos and evening outings and dinners). The workshop had the right number of participants which helped get the most out of his time and the group helped each other also. Almost half of this group had been with David for previous trips which also gives confidence in his workshops. I learned a lot on this first experience and would definitely go to another of his workshops. If you are thinking about one of his workshops, I would highly recommend you attend." - Nick Vadlamudi, Fremont, CA
